Camilla Ann Aikin just completed an independent study with MDP’s Andy Harper on the Southern independent music scene in the 1980s. The class, which consisted of research, writing, and oral history interviews culminates with a short film. And here it is!
End of the Semester Projects
It’s been a very busy semester for MDP Student Projects. Included here are the films created by the Southern Studies 534 course that we teach with Dr. David Wharton. Enjoy the films!
The Beacon. A film by Camilla Ann Aikin, Aristide LeFeve, and Abby Olivier.
Keep It Simple: A Film About Square Books. A film by Hope Owens-Wilson and Caroline Croom.
Yokna. A film by Field Humphrey, Katie Watson, and Gretchen Wood.
Back in Oxford. A film by Jordan Berger and Houston Settle. Fair warning, film contains “adult” language and subject matter.
Let's Break it Down
It’s been a while since I’ve posted so I wanted to come back with a bang. Micah and I recently wrapped up the 2010 Summer Film Workshop where 12 high school and college age kids put up with us for a week of film theory lectures, tutorials, and film screenings. As part of the class we shot a movie trailer of a fake action movie entitled “The UnRetireds”. We tried to throw in a bunch of silly over-the-top action movie moments into the trailer and here a few of the shots broken down by their elements to show how they were put together. I always love these little videos in the behind the scenes extras they put on DVD’s so I figured I’d take a crack at one. Special thanks goes to Andrew Kramer and his invaluable Action Movie Essential Elements. We’ll post the finished trailer online soon but until then enjoy this sneak peak.

SST in the NYT!
Congrats to Tyler Keith, Eric Griffis, and Meghan Leonard–Southern Studies grad. students whose film on the Brown Family Dairy was featured in the New York Times today with a wonderful article on the Brown family. This film came out of the Documentary Fieldwork class that we taught last spring with David Wharton at the Center for the Study of Southern Culture.
Post Time
It’s Post Time for the students in the Documentary Projects Class. They have been working hard this semester putting together short films. Here, Jake Fussell and Novelette Brown work on their film featuring Reverend John Wilkins. Check back in a few weeks for the finished films.
Rock It!
As a part of the week of service leading up to the inauguration of Chancellor Jones, we will be producing a retrospective look at the variety of service projects that are happening on campus. One of the events that happened last night was the “Rock the Bus” where Graduate School members collected school supplies for Mississippi Teacher Corps teachers. In addition, we’ve been following work done by the previous Academic Network piece, the Civil Legal Clinic, the School of Accountancy’s Tax Aid clinic, Computer Science’s grade school computer refurbishment program, and the Intensive English Program’s world mural fundraiser. Check back soon for more info and the finished video.
Campus Connection Followup
Earlier we posted about student intern Alyssa Manhold’s profile of UM Senior Daverin Geralds featured on ESPNU (see Making a Campus Connection). Below is the finished piece which broadcast on national television. Nice job Alyssa and Daverin.
Making a Campus Connection
MDP intern Alyssa Manhold interviewed Ole Miss starting center Daverin Geralds this week for a segment that will run later on the ESPNU Campus Connection. Alyssa spoke with Daverin, an SEC Academic Honor Roll honoree, about the challenges of maintaining high academic standards while playing for a top 10 football team.
ESPNU’s Campus Connection is part of the agreement between the SEC and ESPN to create academic opportunities at each SEC member institution. The UM Media and Documentary Projects Center is producing content for the SEC Academic Network and will work with students on campus to provide content for Campus Connection and for the SEC Week program on ESPNU.
