An initiative of the Southern Documentary Project the Southern Punk Archive collects stories and ephemera from the vibrant communities and involved individuals who have maintained the Southern punk and hardcore network during the past four decades.

History

Southern Punk Archive is a growing physical and digital repository of videos, photos, fliers, music, films, and oral histories with a unique interest in DIY spaces, self-published works, rural punks, artists, writers, and musicians who have contributed to the development and growth of this scene. The archive was established by John Rash and the Southern Documentary Project in 2021 in collaboration with the Center for the Study of Southern Culture and the University of Mississippi Library Archives and Special Collections.

Mission

This archive chooses not to define the boundaries of Southern Punk by conventional borders or imaginary lines established to divide property or local government authority. The geographic region of the American South, rather, for this project, is a less neatly defined collection of cultural connections, community exchanges, tour circuits, punk houses, DIY venues, zines, and disparate rural scenes. If the punks from those communities identify as Southern or having been influenced by Southern Culture then you might find them documented in this archive. Admittedly, this project will certainly never be comprehensive or complete and not everyone will agree with the choices or what is included or excluded. Most items you find within this archive were contributed by the very punks who had their lives changed by involvement in this community.
